Pablo Barbosa was born January 15, 1815 in the small settlement of El Zapote in western Cocula jurisdiction (present-day San Martín de Hidalgo municipality), being the fifth child of Ramón Barbosa (1785–1818) and Marcelina Mendoza (1787–1827). His paternal grandparents were Santiago Barbosa and Lorenza Aguilar were criollos of Cocula. His maternal grandparents were Ignacio Mendoza and Juliana Montaño, however, were from nearby San Jacinto. Pablo was baptized as "Pablo Domingo" on January 21, 1815 at the parish church of San Martín de Hidalgo. His father Ramón died in 1818 when he was just three years old, during there residence in El Zapote.
His mother Marcelina Mendoza remarried widower Manuel Montaño on October 9, 1822. Don Manuel was originally from Cocula, Jalisco but was at the time a resident of the Hacienda San José de Miravalle. Two daughters were born of the Montaño-Mendoza marriage, María Remigia and María Saturnina; both born in San José. Don Manuel raised Pablo, and his other brothers in the Hacienda. Pablo's mother Marcelina died of a fever on January 14, 1827 in San Martín de Hidalgo;[2] one day before his 12th birthday. Pablo's maternal grandmother Juliana Montaño died of a fever also the same year on April 16.
Pablo bought the potrerito and settled in Los Barbosa during the 1830s. On May 20, 1841, at the age of 26, Pablo married María Petra Curiel Ramos of Mesa de Ramos, resident of Los Barbosa who was 15 at the parish church of Ameca, Jalisco.
He bought the large extent of land on the southern portion of Los Barbosa, on the northern half lived the nearby workers of the Hacienda San José de Miravalle, of mestizo, mulatto, and amerindian descent. Pablo would drive five oxen-pulled carts to Guadalajara, Jalisco to buy rolls of cloth donate to the impoverished workers. For this Pablo, Petra, and the Barbosa Curiel family were much esteemed in the rancho.
